This letter is our first winner in the "Letter to a NICU Mom" contest. This sweet and hopeful letter was written by nursing student, future NICU nurse hopeful, and volunteer cuddler Rebecca Koerner. This entry wins in the "original letter" category, because it was written specifically for NICU Central. Enjoy!
Dear NICU Parent,
First off, congratulations on your newest blessing! While the world around you may seem hectic, confusing, and troubling, take a moment to stop and look into those beautiful eyes and realize what an amazing gift of life is lying right in front of you. Your perfect miracle is finally here. Maybe not as you had planned or imagined, but your little one is here and ready for your love. Life has a crazy way of working itself out, and you just gave birth to one of the toughest fighters out there. Not many parents can say that about their newborn child.
There will be times when this all seems too much and you will have the tough time of watching your baby struggle, but there will be times when you get to watch your baby thrive and far exceed your expectations. Your miracle is right in front of you, and has an incredible amount of strength packed into their teeny tiny body. In addition to you being their biggest cheerleaders and supporters, these little superheroes have some incredible sidekicks. The doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, speech pathologists, and every single member of their health care team see that same fight in their perfect eyes, and are going to make their battle a little bit easier by doing everything they can. This next adventure you're going to be on isn't going to be the easiest, but boy is it going to have some of the greatest rewards.
So for now, stop and soak in this amazing gift of life you have been given and don't sit around and say "Why me? Why my baby?" You weren't given this battle from some bad karma, and no answer you come up with will be logical or correct. Your perfect miracle is here, thriving and bursting at the seams with strength. It's time you give them all the love in the world, it's what they so desperately need right now and it's a gift you can give them that no one else truly can. I wish you the best of luck as you take on this new experience in life, and keep in mind, life is a beautiful thing, and with lots of love, faith, and trust, you can watch your little superhero soar.
In the words of A.A. Milne and Winnie the Pooh, "....You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem..."
Thanks, again, Rebecca!
